How offline mode and sync work

In short

Mitta keeps a copy of your data on your phone, so training and logging work without a signal. Every change goes into a queue and is sent to the cloud when you are online and the app is open. The coach, photo logging and a few other AI features need internet.

What works without a signal?

Your data lives in a database on your device. The screens read from that copy, not from the internet, so these keep working offline:

  • Starting a workout and logging sets, weight and reps.
  • Logging food: searching your own products, NEVO and the offline Open Food Facts copy, and typing a meal in the quick log bar (it is matched without AI).
  • Scanning a barcode, as long as the product is already on your device (see below).
  • Logging weight and cardio, moving planned workouts, and looking at your history.

While you are offline a bar at the top says Offline: training and logging still work, your entries will sync later. None of this depends on your plan.

What needs internet?

Anything that asks a server:

  • The coach. The chat shows You’re offline. The coach only works with internet. and the field says Offline. The coach is part of Pro + AI coach.
  • Photo logging. Tapping the camera or library option shows Photos only work online.
  • Quick log with AI. Without a connection Mitta matches your text itself, without AI.
  • Label scanning, recipe import and the Weekcheck. The Weekcheck says You are offline.
  • Turning on notifications shows No connection. Try again.
  • Refresh data in Settings, which says No connection. Reloading your data needs internet.

A new device also needs a connection once. On first login Mitta fetches your data from the cloud. Without a signal you see No connection until you are online.

How does your entry get to the cloud?

Each time you save something, Mitta writes it to the database on your device and puts a line in a queue. Then it tries to send the queue to the cloud. If there is no connection, the lines wait.

The queue is sent in the order the changes were made, so a delete never jumps ahead of the entry it belongs to. Mitta tries to sync:

  • when you open the app,
  • when your phone comes back online,
  • when you return to the app from another one,
  • shortly after every change,
  • and every minute while the app is open.

That list matters because iPhones do not let a web app sync in the background. If you log a set in a lift with no signal and then close the app, it stays on your phone until you open the app again with a connection.

How do you see what is saved?

At the top of Settings a small status shows where you are:

You seeIt means
SavedNothing is waiting to be sent.
SyncingChanges are being sent or fetched.
Offline · 3 pendingNo connection. Three changes are waiting on your phone.
Sync failed. Tap to try again. You are online, but it did not work. Tap it to retry.

On other screens the profile button gets a small dot instead: yellow when changes are waiting offline, red when sync failed.

One more case. If a single change is rejected because of its content, Mitta does not retry it forever. It keeps it on your phone and carries on with the rest. After 24 hours a banner appears, 1 change not in the cloud, with a Try again button. In Settings the banner shows right away. Updating the app usually clears it.

What if you use two devices?

Mitta fetches changes from the cloud and sends yours, per table. Some rules decide what happens when they meet:

  • Your unsent change wins on your phone. If a row has a change in the queue, fetching does not overwrite it.
  • Whole entries, not single fields. Mitta sends the full entry. If you edit the same entry on two devices, the one that reaches the cloud last is the one that stays.
  • Deletes travel too. Something you delete on one device is removed on the other, unless that device still has an unsent change for it.
  • One weight per day. If a weight for that date is already in the cloud from another device, Mitta merges them into one entry instead of keeping two.

So avoid editing the same set or meal on two devices while one of them is offline. Logging different things on each is fine.

What are the limits?

  • Logging out. Logging out erases the copy on your phone. If changes are waiting, Mitta first shows Not everything is saved yet with Save first, then log out, Stay logged in and Log out anyway. The last one erases the waiting changes too.
  • Barcodes. A product is found offline if it is among your own products or in the offline copy (a Netherlands and Belgium extract of Open Food Facts, loaded in the background on Wi-Fi when you open Food). Other products need internet.
  • New versions. Mitta asks before updating (New version ready, Update now). The app itself is stored by your browser, so it opens offline.
  • Home Screen. Adding Mitta to your Home Screen makes it open full screen. Mitta suggests this and says training and logging then work offline.

Offline mode is built to keep your entries on your phone until they can be sent. It is not a backup. Check that the status says Saved before you log out or switch phones.

Logging sets in an active workout in Mitta.

How Mitta does it

Your phone first, the cloud second.

Mitta saves every entry on your device before it tries the network. The queue is sent in order when you are online, and the status in Settings tells you what is waiting.

  • Log anywhereWorkouts, sets and food work without a signal.
  • A queue, in orderChanges are sent in the order you made them.
  • Warned before you lose itLogging out with unsent changes asks you first.
  • Honest about the limitsThe coach and photo logging say clearly when they need internet.

Questions about
How offline mode and sync work

Can I log a whole workout with no signal?

Yes. Starting the workout, logging sets and finishing it all work offline. Open the app again with a connection and the sets are sent.

How long can I stay offline?

Mitta has no time limit for the queue. Changes wait on your phone until they can be sent. They are lost if you choose Log out anyway.

Does offline mode cost extra?

No. Logging and syncing do not depend on your plan. The coach, photo logging and label scanning need internet and are part of Pro + AI coach.

My status says Sync failed. What now?

Tap it to try again. If you are online and it keeps failing, your entries are still kept on your phone.

I changed phones. Is my data there?

Log in on the new phone with a connection. Mitta fetches everything that is in the cloud. Anything that was still waiting on the old phone is not.
