How to connect Apple Health

In short

In the iPhone app, open Settings, then Connections, then Apple Health, and tap Connect. iOS asks which data you share. From then on Mitta keeps itself and Apple Health in sync: it reads your weight, steps and cardio workouts, and writes your finished workouts back. The link needs Pro. The browser version cannot do this.

What do you need for the link?

Three things:

  • The iPhone app. A browser cannot reach Apple Health, so on the web the link is not available. Settings says Only in the iPhone and Android app there. The iPhone app follows through TestFlight, so whether you can use it depends on whether you have been given a build.
  • The Pro plan or Pro + AI coach. Without Pro the row shows Pro and a See Pro button.
  • Apple Health on your iPhone, which is already there.

Importing a one-off export file from Apple Health works in the web app and stays free. That is a different thing, described in How to import Apple Health data.

How do you connect it?

  1. In Mitta, open Settings, then Connections.
  2. Tap Apple Health. A sheet opens with what Mitta reads and writes.
  3. Tap Connect. iOS then asks for permission per type of data. You can allow some and refuse others.
  4. Mitta runs a first update straight away and shows what it found, for example Updated: 12 weigh-ins, 4 workouts in.

The sheet then says Connected, with the time of the last update. Mitta asks for permission only when you tap Connect, never when you open the app.

The first update looks back up to 90 days. If you share less history with Mitta in the iOS permission screen, less comes in. Nothing breaks.

What does Mitta read from Apple Health?

DataWhat Mitta does with it
WeightSaved as your weight for that day. If you already entered a weight for the day, yours stays.
Body fatSaved, from a smart scale. Progress then shows body fat and lean mass.
StepsSaved per day. Progress shows the weekly average.
Cardio and sport workoutsSaved as cardio sessions with duration, distance, calories and heart rate, for example a run recorded by your Apple Watch.
Active energyShown for today in Progress, under Cardio. Not saved.
Sleep, HRV and resting heart rateUsed in your check-in, on your phone. Not saved.

Strength workouts from other apps are not read. They have no sets or weights, so there is nothing useful to bring in. Workouts that started within two minutes of one Mitta already has are not added a second time.

What does Mitta write to Apple Health?

Two switches in the sheet decide this:

  • Workouts to Health is on by default. It writes the workouts and cardio you finish in Mitta, from the moment you connected. Older workouts are not written.
  • Weight to Health is off by default. Turn it on to write weights you enter in Mitta. Leave it off if you have a smart scale, so you do not get two readings.

Turning a switch on may open the iOS permission screen. If writing is blocked, Mitta says how to allow it: Health, your profile picture, Apps, Mitta.

Mitta only writes what was made in Mitta. Data that came from Apple Health is never sent back, so nothing goes in circles. If you delete a workout in Mitta that it wrote to Health, it is removed there too.

When does it update?

Mitta updates when you open the app, when you come back to it, and a few seconds after you finish a workout or save a weight. It does not run in the background while the app is closed. So a run from your watch shows up the next time you open Mitta.

You can also tap Update now in the sheet. If the last update failed, the sheet says so and you can try again.

If your watch records a workout that Mitta also has, for example a planned run, Mitta fills in that session with the watch data instead of making a second one.

How do you turn it off?

Open Settings, Connections, Apple Health and tap Turn off connection. Mitta stops reading and writing. Data that is already in Mitta stays. Turning it back on later does not write your old workouts twice.

To change what Mitta may read, use the Health app: your profile picture, then Apps, then Mitta. Revoking access there works too.

Apple Health data is stored like the rest of your data in Mitta, and used only for the app itself, never for advertising. To remove it entirely, see How to export or delete your data.

How Mitta does it

A link you control.

In the iPhone app, Mitta can keep itself and Apple Health in sync. You choose what it may read, whether it writes workouts and weight back, and you can turn it off at any time.

  • Asks when you connectiOS permission comes after you tap Connect, never at app start.
  • Your entries winA weight you entered yourself is not replaced by one from Health.
  • No doublesWorkouts are matched by start time, and what Mitta wrote is not read back.
  • Off whenever you likeOne tap stops the link. What is already in Mitta stays.

Questions about
How to connect Apple Health

Does the link work in the web app?

No. A browser cannot reach Apple Health. In the web app you can import an export file once, and that is free.

Which plan do I need?

Pro or Pro + AI coach. Without Pro the Apple Health row in Settings shows Pro and a See Pro button.

Will my workouts show up twice?

No. A workout that starts within two minutes of one Mitta already has is skipped, and what Mitta wrote itself is not read back.

Does it keep running when the app is closed?

No. It updates when you open or return to the app, and shortly after you finish a workout.

What happens to my data when I turn it off?

Mitta stops reading and writing. What is already in Mitta stays, and what Mitta wrote to Apple Health stays there.
